Do you need a great wine to go with a big meal being planned? Or maybe you’re ready to branch out and try a new beer. Pettyjohn’s Liquor & Wine at 613 South Broadway has experts to guide you in the right direction.
Pettyjohn’s opened in the Table Mesa Shopping Center in 1969 and was run by Jon & Marie Pettyjohn. In 1977, Chris and Ann Coppinger started working there after graduating from college. Coppingers bought Pettyjohn’s in 1997. They worked at becoming experts in their fields: Ann’s subject is wine and Chris’ expertise is in spirits. Both are certified by the Wine and Spirits Education Trust (WSET). Pettyjohn’s beer expert, Ben Kobi, has been there 16 years and is Cicerone Certified. “We know our stuff, but we’re not stuffy,” Ann Coppinger says.
The store has 6,000 square feet of wine, beer, liquor and mixers from all over the world. With free, weekly in-store beer and wine tastings, plus a regular newsletter promoting events and specials, the team at Pettyjohn’s is also educating south Boulder.
The company gives back to the community doing wine-tastings to raise money for local non-profits. But specifically they developed their own wine label that donates money to the Humane Society of Boulder Valley for every bottle purchased.
One thing is for sure, employees and customers at Pettyjohn’s are like family. “Our Assistant Manager, Joshua Farrell decided to take 3 months off and walk the Appalachian Trail. He did the entire thing,” Ann Coppinger remembers. “We put a map of the trail up in the store and posted where he was in the walk. Customers and employees put together care packages for him that he was able to pick up at post offices along the way. It was an amazing experience for all.”
Whether you need to make a quick beer run, grab some wine for ladies night, or find something for a fancy occasion, check out Pettyjohn’s in the Table Mesa Shopping Center. They’ll take care of you.
